Councilor Zita Pels will urge the government to introduce a climate label for homes. She does this after an advice from the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) yesterday. The AFM concluded that ‘physical climate risks have a significant and growing impact on the housing market’.
The AFM wrote, among other things that ‘peat and clay layers settle, which not only can cause cracks in walls and facades, but also increases the risk of pile rot in wooden foundations’. Foundation repairs often cost between 50,000 and 100,000 euros and these costs are almost always borne by the owner himself. A mandatory climate label would ensure that buyers and purchasing agents are aware of these possible additional costs in advance.
D66 councilor Suleyman Aslami just asked Pels during the city council meeting for her opinion on such a climate label. “It is news that I think will come as a bombshell for many Amsterdam homeowners, but also tenants,” the councilor responded. “If it costs 50 or even 100,000 euros to have to invest in the preservation of the home at all. So I endorse the AFM’s call.” She did emphasize that it must be a national label.
Aslami was happy with Pels’ efforts. “Many houses in Amsterdam are built on wooden stilts, the risks are enormous.”
