[서울=뉴스핌] Reporter Bae Jeong-won = The government announced on the 17th that it will provide humanitarian aid worth $2 million (about KRW 2.7 billion) to Libya, which has suffered massive flood damage.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the typhoon that struck the area around the city of Derna in northeastern Libya on the 10th (local time) has resulted in 11,300 deaths, 10,000 missing, and more than 30,000 victims. In addition, two dams collapsed and at least 25% of Derna city, including bridges, hospitals, and schools, was flooded and destroyed.

Accordingly, the government decided to provide humanitarian assistance through the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

A government official said, “We hope that this support will help the Libyan people affected by typhoons and floods to quickly stabilize and recover the affected areas.”
