Petra De Sutter of Groen takes a more cautious stance in “The seventh day”. “Everything will depend on the conditions. Even if we decide to keep the two youngest nuclear power plants open longer, we will need gas-fired power stations.”
Keeping more nuclear power stations open, as De Wever proposes, is also not feasible, she says. “A nuclear power plant is not a microwave that you switch off and on as you please. You need a lot of preparation to organize that extension safely. And you also need an operator. The current operator, Engie, is not interested.” Whether a decision will actually be made on Friday remains to be seen, but De Sutter certainly hopes for a decision in principle.
