Jakarta (ANTARA) – The government will intensify vaccination in areas designated as extraordinary polio outbreaks (KLB), including in Klaten, Central Java.
According to Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, the emergence of polio outbreaks in several areas, including Central Java and Aceh, was due to disruption of the mandatory vaccination program during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We see that some of this polio was caused by vaccination during the COVID era which was not (optimal) so now we can see the impact,” said Budi when met at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Friday.
In order to respond to the outbreak, he said, the Ministry of Health will increase polio vaccination in the areas in question.
“We have also done this in North Sumatra and West Sumatra (following the polio outbreak in Aceh),” said Minister of Health Budi.
Recently, the Ministry of Health designated Klaten as a polio outbreak after one positive case was found in a six-year-old girl in Manisrenggo District.
Following these findings, the Klaten Regency Government will immunize hundreds of thousands of its residents.
Acting Head of the Klaten District Health Service, Anggit Budiarto, said that 118,600 people in the area were the target recipients of immunization at the National Immunization Subweek held simultaneously in Central Java and East Java Provinces.
“Simultaneous immunization will be carried out for children under seven years in all areas of Central Java and East Java, starting on January 15,” he said in Klaten, Thursday (4/1).
Polio vaccination is carried out in two stages. The first stage is targeted to be completed in one week, then repeated again at least one month later.
