The Flemish government’s telecom traffic comes with a hefty price tag. For example, the contract that Orange Belgium won is worth more than 23 million euros. It includes mobile telephony, mobile data communication and the Internet of Things for government administrations in the Flemish region. In total, the telecom company will activate more than 75,000 SIM cards and 9,500 cards for machine-to-machine communication. This is a contract for a period of five years, which can be extended to seven years.
The value of the contract that Telenet won could even amount to 43 million euros over the entire term of a maximum of seven years. The Mechelen company manages landlines and virtual telephone exchanges for around 250 public organizations at more than 1,000 locations.
For Telenet, this is the third and fourth government contract in a short time. It previously also acquired Schoolnet and Belnet. With Schoolnet it offers a solution for the needs of digital education, with Belnet it connects universities, colleges, research centers and government services.
Proximus, which has provided these services since the previous tender in 2018, is now largely missing out. In the coming years, the company will only provide services for the PSTN lines, the public telephone network.
On a negative Brussels stock exchange, Proximus shares rose by 0.35 percent to 7.56 euros on Tuesday despite the loss of contracts. The winners of the tender lost ground. Orange Belgium gave up 2.01 percent at a closing price of 13.62 euros, Telenet was cut 0.47 percent to 21.06 euros.
