Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said Indonesia is pushing for vaccines covid-19 categorized as public goods or general goods to the World Trade Organization (WTO). However, the proposal has not received a favorable response from IN THAT.
“We are also struggling because yesterday at the WTO the request that this vaccine be public goods seems to be still facing very tough challenges,” he said at the FK UNAIR Professor’s recommendation for the Acceleration of Handling Covid-19, Friday (30/7).
The hope, he said, by being categorized as public goods the covid-19 vaccine can be produced and accessed by all countries in the world. In line with this, the government is also accelerating the development of vaccines made by the nation’s children, namely the Merah Putih vaccine.
The production of this Red and White vaccine and other domestically made vaccines can reduce Indonesia’s dependence on imported Covid-19 vaccines.
“The government is still looking for opportunities to make vaccines from domestic research, of course, and once again the government really hopes for Eijkman and Universitas Airlangga,” he said.
He said the government also firmly rejected the politicization of the Covid-19 vaccine even though a number of countries had imposed geopolitical regulations on the Covid-19 vaccine.
For example, people who want to go to China must get vaccines made in China, as well as to Europe and a number of other regions.
“Therefore, the government encourages that this vaccination should not be politicized. We ask that this vaccine be public goods, can be produced by anyone,” he said.
Previously, the Head of the Institute for Molecular Biology (Eijkman) Amin Soebandrio said the red and white vaccine would undergo clinical trials at the end of 2021 with a clinical trial period of eight months. Furthermore, Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) is expected to be obtained after eight months of the red and white vaccine undergoing clinical trials.
“It is hoped that by the end of the year or early 2022, clinical trials can begin,” Amin said in a hearing with Commission VII DPR some time ago.
Eijkman has been researching and developing red and white vaccines since April 2020. Currently, the process of developing vaccines made by the nation’s children is more than 90 percent.
