Government Stops Coal Exports, Sri Mulyani Reveals This Fact

Jakarta

The government through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) banned coal exports from January 1 to January 31, 2022. The Minister of Finance (Menkeu) Sri Mulyani Indrawati also revealed the facts behind the policy.

Sri Mulyani alluded to the obligation to supply coal for domestic needs (domestic market obligation / DMO) which did not work. If the policy is implemented, domestic needs will certainly be met, so there is no need to stop coal exports.

“That’s why actually the policy regarding the DMO was decided, if it was fulfilled, there was no need for a decision today, right. If yesterday’s DMO was carried out, there should be no need to do that, but apparently not, because the opportunity to export is so great. high prices with high prices,” he said at the 2021 State Budget press conference at the Ministry of Finance’s Office, Central Jakarta, Monday (3/1/2022).

The former managing director of the World Bank did not speak clearly whether coal entrepreneurs violated the DMO policy, where entrepreneurs must supply 25% of their production domestically.

But clearly, Sri Mulyani said there would be policy implications from the current situation in the coal sector.

“This is what we will see later, there is a choice regarding the price of coal, there is a DMO decision, there is a price to talk about domestic electricity, there is talk about commitments for foreign contracts, right like that. “Sometimes we are forced by the situation it changes so very quickly,” he explained.
