At the crucial adjustment meeting of the Bundestag’s budget committee on November 16, 2023, some cuts in the draft budget for 2024, which the GEW, trade unions and sponsoring associations had criticized, were reversed. This means that some important political education projects have been secured for the time being.
“Especially in these times, important political education projects are being preserved.” (Ralf Becker)
“Especially in these times, important political education projects are being preserved, and the jobs of those working there are largely secured for the time being,” explained Ralf Becker, further training expert at the GEW.
The nationwide prevention program for schools “Respect Coaches” appears to have been saved for the time being. The budget is now set at 22.5 million euros. Previously, only 2.5 million euros were earmarked for completing the project. The program should now be more clearly focused on the focus of anti-Semitism.
Prevention projects against anti-Semitism
Funds were also increased for further prevention projects against anti-Semitism: the German-Israeli youth exchange is being funded with 2.3 million euros – more than previously planned. In addition, the “Berlin flagship project for understanding between Jews and Muslims”, the Kreuzberg initiative against anti-Semitism, will receive 250,000 euros more funding from the budget of the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs.
The originally planned cuts for Anne Frank Day and the Anne Frank House have been lifted. In addition, the Anne Frank Center’s anti-Semitism research and prevention work in prisons will receive subsidies of 280,000 euros.
