Government Responds To Prohibited Homecoming Protests But Tourism Is Opened

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (Menko PMK) Muhadjir Effendy understand the turmoil that is emerging in society regarding prohibition of going home in the midst of a pandemic. Muhadjir also emphasized a number of reasons why a number of tourist attractions remain open during the Eid holidays.

“Yesterday there were protests, wow going home is prohibited but tourism is allowed, yes, actually the tour is in the framework of Eid, so it is not a tour with a distant destination,” said Muhadjir in a discussion entitled Untung Rugi Going Home in the Middle of the Pandemic which was broadcast live via YouTube BPKN, Tuesday (20/4).

“Yes, if people are not allowed to go anywhere, local tourism will be opened so that they can go to vacation spots but with controlled obedience that is actually what is meant,” continued Muhadjir added.

Muhadjir underlined that people can still travel before the Eid celebrations begin in May. It’s just that, he said, the movements carried out were not on a large scale, but on a local scale people were still allowed to travel.

“Actually, various kinds of movements before and during Eid are still allowed without any problems, including to local tours with strict conditions,” said Muhadjir.

The tightening, explained Muhadjir, is related to the maximum capacity allowed at tourist attractions. In addition, he also said that sanctions for people who do not comply with health protocols will be enforced.

“Sanctions for those who do not comply with the SOP will also be enforced,” he said.

Muhadjir admitted, indeed many think that the rules relating to the ban on going home to tackle the spike in post-Eid Covid cases are less firm. However, it was not without reason.

In addition, he said, the opening of tourist attractions, for example, would not be allowed to open all regions simultaneously. In fact, it is only enforced locally in an area while still imposing restrictions on visits for people outside the region. Muhadjir hopes that not only the growth rate of Covid-19 can be suppressed, but the people’s economy can also continue.

“This is the strategy we are implementing and hopefully by doing so, Covid can also be controlled, but also people’s purchasing power, the wheels of the economy can still move,” he said.
