Government parties want special UN mission to get grain from Ukraine

The parties believe that Russia and the West blame each other, so the Netherlands must submit a special UN resolution.

D66 MP Sjoerd Sjoerdsma thinks it is ‘incredibly important’ that the grain can be exported from Ukraine again. “160 million people are now threatened by hunger because the grain is not released.”

According to Ruben Brekelmans of the VVD, such a special UN resolution should ensure that Russia is condemned for the grain blockade. “Because hunger is now being used as a weapon,” says Brekelmans. He believes there should be a corridor through which the grain can be exported safely.

Ships under UN flag

Removing grain over land would be impossible, because it is too dangerous. But the sea is currently blocked by Russia. The parties therefore advocate a special humanitarian mission with ships flying the UN flag.

“That means that ships from Odessa or from another port must be able to sail safely to other countries,” says Brekelmans.

food crisis

Ukraine has exported 643,000 tons of grain since the beginning of May, the Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture recently reported. That was 1.8 million tons in the same period in 2021.

The shortage of grain causes many food problems in the world. Africa is particularly affected by this. The continent is struggling with extreme drought and on top of that no grain from Ukraine enters the continent. Aid organizations fear that food will become unaffordable. There is a famine looming.
