The government will offer Hungarians abroad to refinance their student loans, the Ministry of Economy announced on Friday – reports the MTI news agency.

With this measure, the government wants to support the return of young Hungarians living abroad, according to the ministry. A draft regulation on the measure will be made available to the public on Friday, it added. According to the draft, young Hungarians who study abroad and return to Hungary to work will be able to refinance their foreign student loans up to 10 million forints with a loan from the state student loan provider Diakhitel. The Diakhitel loan for tuition fees is interest-free, while the interest rate for non-purpose Diakhitel loans is currently 7.99%. Young Hungarians who take advantage of this opportunity would be entitled to the same benefits as other Diakhitel borrowers, including loan relief and repayment suspension for families with children, as well as tax-free repayment support from the employer.
