Government meets with FPF and passes decision on Campeonato Paulista to the Public Ministry | Paulista championship

A meeting on Monday morning threw the decision on maintaining the two-week break in the Paulista Championship into the hands of the Public Ministry. Representatives of the Government of the State of São Paulo and the São Paulo Football Federation participated in the meeting.

Last Thursday, the state government announced the suspension, for 15 days, of sports activities, including the Paulista Championship, as one of the measures to contain the new coronavirus. Initially, the break runs from Monday until March 30 – and reaches three rounds of the competition.

With the delay in the definition, the game this Wednesday, between São Bento and Palmeiras, should pass to Belo Horizonte, something that was already being considered. The match is delayed from the third round.

The stoppage was a recommendation from the Public Ministry and included religious activities. On Thursday, when justifying the decision, João Medina, from the São Paulo government’s Covid-19 Contingency Center, cited the MP’s request.

– We are in an emergency phase. It has losses for all sectors. There is suffering for the whole of society, for all economic activity. In relation to football, we are attending to a letter, a recommendation from the State Prosecutor’s Office. That was out of our league, ”said Medina.

At this morning’s meeting, it was decided that the championship could be resumed, as long as with the agreement of the Public Ministry. The Federation of São Paulo tries to meet with the agency this Monday. In an official note, the entity that commands football in SP manifested itself as follows:

“The São Paulo Football Federation met this Monday morning (15) with Patrícia Ellen, secretary of Economic Development, Aildo Rodrigues Ferreira, secretary of Sports, and Marco Vinholi, secretary of Regional Development, at Palácio dos Bandeirantes, to address the continuation of the Paulista Championship in the Emergency Phase. The FPF will now meet with the State Prosecutor’s Office. For this reason, the meetings that were scheduled with the clubs this Monday were postponed to Tuesday. “
