Recently, as controversy arose over the distribution of pork belly with excessive fat content, the government decided to inspect the quality of livestock products.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on the 17th that it will conduct special quality control inspections and guidance on 10,000 livestock product processing and distribution companies from the 22nd to the 8th of next month.

Through this special inspection, the government prevents the distribution of low-quality livestock products during the peak Lunar New Year season when demand for livestock products increases.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs inspects the quality management status of livestock product processing and distribution companies in connection with the special crackdown on the livestock product traceability system during the Lunar New Year peak season.

In addition, we plan to inform each company of quality control methods such as shaping standards, removal of excess fat, and inspection.

The number of people participating in the inspection is about 2,850, including employees of local governments, the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service, and the Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock Quarantine Headquarters.

In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, in cooperation with Nonghyup Livestock Economic Holdings, decided to intensively inspect compliance with the ‘Pork Belly Quality Management Manual’ at about 230 processing plants and 1,500 sales sites operated by local agricultural cooperatives and livestock cooperatives and provide special training for workers.

Even after this special inspection, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs plans to continue quality control inspections focusing on periods of high demand for livestock products, such as Pork Belly Day in March and Family Month in May.

Previously, complaints erupted among consumers over ‘biget lump pork belly’.

Recently, criticism of so-called ‘non-fat pork belly’ spread after a consumer posted a post saying that pork belly purchased from an open market had excessive fat.

Last month, quality issues were raised with some of the pork belly that was returned as a gift for the hometown love donation program in Michuhol-gu, Incheon, and controversy arose over the distribution of over-fat pork belly at last year’s ‘Pork Belly Day’ discount event.
