Jakarta –
Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI) inaugurated 550 Indonesian Migrant Workers Volunteer Community (Kawan PMI) to facilitate access to placement and protection services PMI. Head of BP2MI Benny Rhamdani said the inauguration was a form of the government’s commitment to involve the public in development.
“Today I inaugurated 550 PMI comrades from 5 provinces, namely from Lampung, Banten, West Java, Central Java and East Java,” said Benny Rhamdani in a written statement, Saturday (22/7/2023).
Benny said BP2MI also appointed 22 national board members of the Association of Indonesian Migrant Workers Entrepreneurs (PMI Officers). He believes the presence of PMI Comrades and PMI Officers will help BP2MI provide protection for migrant workers.
“Of course I believe that you are individuals who have commitment, integrity and care for the lives of Indonesian Migrant Workers and their families. And I believe that you have sincerity and will carry out your duties and obligations as well as possible to help the government, in this important case BP2MI to protect our Indonesian Migrant Workers and their families from head to toe,” he said.
He said PMI comrades and PMI officers were expected to facilitate access to placement and protection services for PMI. These include assisting PMI in registration, protection and prevention of illegal placement.
“The PMI comrades and PMI officers can be formed at the district/city, provincial and/or central levels. PMI comrades assist BP2MI in carrying out information dissemination activities. Assistance for Indonesian Migrant Workers is constrained and their families. Likewise with preventing illegal placement of Indonesian Migrant Workers,” he said.
In addition, Benny said PMI Comrades had been formed in 175 districts in Indonesia, including in Lampung, Banten, West Java, Central Java, NTB and North Sulawesi. He said Comrade PMI members consisted of various walks of life.
“BP2MI has involved community leaders, religious leaders, youth leaders and traditional leaders who are included in the Comrade PMI structure. For Officers, PMI was formed as an effort to improve economic welfare for Indonesian Migrant Workers and their families,” he said.
Minister of BUMN, Erick Thohir also attended the inauguration ceremony. Erick said the formation of PMI Comrades and PMI Officers was one way for the government to involve the community in protecting PMI.
“Congratulations on the inauguration and inauguration of PMI Comrades with PMI Officers. This is an opportunity, as well as the government’s side to invite the community to be involved in protecting Indonesian migrant workers as a whole,” said Erick Thohir.
He hopes PMI Comrades and PMI Officers can synergize optimally with BP2MI. According to him, this synergy and cooperation will help reduce and prevent illegal PMI placement syndicates.
“PMI comrades and PMI officers are a wave that will swell to hit Indonesian migrant worker placement syndicates. I need to say that I, then Pak Benny have one thing in common, namely that we are both assistants to President Jokowi. Second, our awareness to realize and accept the mandate given by the leadership is what we really carry out. Not to take care of luxury or self-pleasure,” he said.
Then, the Head of the West Java Manpower and Transmigration Office, Rachmat Taufik Garsadi hopes that PMI Comrades and PMI Officers can officially help people work abroad. He also hopes that the practice of placing illegal PMIs will decrease.
“West Java is a large area, but has the highest unemployment rate in Indonesia, namely 7.89%. We hope that working abroad offered by BP2MI will be a solution for all West Java residents,” said Rachmat Taufik Garsadi.
“Our hope is that PMI Comrades and PMI Officers will make it easy for our citizens to work abroad officially. There is no longer any practice of placing illegal Indonesian migrant workers,” he added.
