JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV – The government through the Ministry of Health has expanded the scope of administering Human Papillomavirus (HPV) immunization to elementary school students in all cities and districts in Indonesia starting this year.
Director General of Disease Prevention and Control Maxi Rein Rondonuwu said this was done as an effort by the government to protect the future of Indonesian girls so that they are always healthy, avoiding cervical cancer which is the second leading cause of cancer death in Indonesia.
“This HPV vaccine will be given free of charge and is very important to protect girls from cervical cancer or cervical cancer. The death rate from this cancer reaches 50% because they come too late.”
“Immunization is the cheapest effort. If you have cervical cancer, the costs are certain to be expensive. For this reason, the Ministry of Health is expanding HPV nationally,” said Maxi in his official statement, Wednesday (9/8/2023).
“Please convey to the community, especially those who have daughters aged 11 and 12 years, to immediately take advantage of this government program,” he added.

He explained that HPV immunization had begun in 2016 in DKI Jakarta Province, and by 2021 there would already be 20 regencies/cities implementing HPV immunization. In 2022 it will be expanded to 112 Regencies/Cities. In total there are 132 Regencies/Cities that have implemented the introduction of HPV immunization.
The acceleration of HPV immunization continues to be carried out by carrying out a national expansion in all Regencies/Cities in 2023.
The provision of this immunization for children who go to school is carried out through the activities of the School Children Immunization Month or BIAS.
Maxi explained, cervical cancer (cervical) is a type of cancer that causes the number two highest death and one of the biggest health financing burdens in Indonesia. In 2021 (Globocan data), there are 36,633 cases of cervical cancer in Indonesia with an increasing death rate.
