TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir dismissed accusations of politicization behind the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) renovation plan ahead of the 2023 U-17 World Cup. According to him, the renovation plan is a form of government encouragement to make JIS worthy of being a World Cup-class match arena.
He ensured that the government was serious about promoting JIS to FIFA as one of the U-17 World Cup locations. “If JIS is associated with political issues, it’s the other way around. In fact, this government wants to renovate 22 stadiums to international and FIFA standards,” said Erick in a written statement in Jakarta on Thursday, July 6, 2023.
“The government will also propose fields for U-17. There are six or 8 fields that want to be submitted, including JIS. But before submitting it, we have to improve the quality. When the GBK Stadium was proposed as the location for the Asian Games, the grass was completely repaired and there was improved access. “This (JIS) is also the same,” he added.
Erick invited all parties to support efforts to make JIS and other stadiums fit for the U-17 World Cup matches. Because, according to him, there are high standards that must be met in order for the stadium to pass FIFA’s inspection. “The World Cup is the highest event that must have the best standards.”
Even though JIS has international-class stadium features, according to Erick, there is no guarantee that the stadium will pass FIFA’s verification. He also worked hard to perfect a number of JIS facilities so they could be used at the 2023 U-17 World Cup.

“International standards and standards FIFA not necessarily the same. For example, when the Argentine team arrived, their team checked the training ground and the stadium twice. Until finally choosing the GBK stadium as a training ground with more safety reasons. What does it mean, they have standards. What is the FIFA standard, yes it is even higher (than Argentina’s standard),” said Erick.
The man who serves as the Minister of BUMN thinks that repairing a number of facilities, especially grass, makes sense. According to him, the quality of the grass must be the best considering the many matches that will be played. “Moreover, this will be used as a tournament where one field will be used for grouping, maybe six matches within a week,” said Erick.
