Government decrees closing of bars at 9 pm until 9 April

The Government decreed today that the bars will have to close doors from 21:00, every day, as a way of trying to contain the spread of the Covid-19 outbreak.

These measures are effective immediately and will remain in effect until April 9th.

In a government order signed today by the ministers of State, Economy and Digital Transition, Internal Administration and Health, the measure – in force as of today – in view of the public health emergency situation is justified.

The closure of bars is the result of the epidemiological situation worldwide and the increase in cases of infection by Covid-19 in Portugal, with the progressive extension of its geographical expression, read in the note sent to the media.

Closing the bars responds to the “need to contain possible contagion lines” in Portugal, the same note indicates.

In view of the progress of the pandemic, as declared by the World Health Organization, several countries have adopted exceptional measures to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.

First detected in China in December, Covid-19 has already claimed more than 5,500 deaths worldwide and the number of infected people now exceeds 143,000 people.

There are records in more than 135 countries and territories, including Portugal, with 169 confirmed cases.
