Government Cuts to Elderly Care Budget Revealed: Impact and Controversies

Sep 17, 2023 at 11:41 p.m

The government is removing 225 million euros from the cuts in elderly care. This is evident from the budget of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), which is in the hands of NRC. The amount is about half of what would actually be cut.

The House of Representatives declared the cuts and plans for elderly care controversial. Due to the fall of the cabinet, they are no longer treated. It remained unclear what should be done with the budget cuts of around 460 million in 2024. After all, VWS had the budget as good as ready.

The House of Representatives wanted clarity on this from outgoing minister Conny Helder (Long-term Care, VVD) in a debate on elderly care last Thursday. She could not provide that clarity because the budget of VWS, like that of the other ministries, will not be officially released until Tuesday, Budget Day. Until then, confidentiality applies.
