Government crisis, Conte resignation: hypothesis in the field

(Adnkronos)

With the resignation of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, the government crisis enters the crucial phase. The latest news refers to the birth of a group of leaders in the Senate, the ‘Europeanists’. On the day when the consultations with the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, are starting, there are different scenarios on the horizon: from Conte ter to the elections. These, at the moment, are the most accredited hypotheses.

COUNT TO HAVE

It is the solution desired by the outgoing premier, but the numbers do not seem to be on his side at the moment. Especially in the Senate. To keep the majority standing, in fact, Matteo Renzi remains decisive: an observation that makes the nerves of the entire majority fragile, from the Pd to Leu, passing from M5S to the same Conte. The numbers at Palazzo Madama are in fact still below 10 and Conte’s resignation did not lead to the turning point desired by the ‘bridging’.

GOVERNMENT GUIDED BY A TECHNICIAN

It is one of the hypotheses that is taking shape in these hours in the wake of the so-called ‘Ciampi model’, that is the government led in 1993 by the then Governor of the Bank of Italy. The names that go around are always the same: Carlo Cottarelli, Marta Cartabia and Luciana Lamorgese, with the two women on pole, while the Mario Draghi hypothesis seems to fade.

A POLITICIAN IN THE PLACE OF COUNT

At the moment the possibility of replacing Conte with a politician appears complex. The names of Luigi Di Maio and Stefano Patuanelli, considered the ‘eligible candidates’ of the 5 Star Movement, would hardly have the support of the Democratic Party. And on the other side, the pentastellati could not metabolize a premier dem.

GOVERNMENT OF NATIONAL UNITY

The idea was launched by the leader of Forza Italia, Silvio Berlusconi: a government formed by the main political forces to ferry the country out of the emergency fueled by the Covid pandemic, before giving the word back to the Italians. It is an option that, however, does not seem to warm the different souls of the center-right, starting with Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy who has clearly expressed herself for the return to the polls.

ELECTIONS

The return to the polls is the last resort and at the same time a hypothesis that today is far from discarded. If the government crisis were not able to recompose, President Mattarella would only have to dissolve the Houses and call elections. For some political forces, from Matteo Salvini’s League to Giorgia Meloni’s FdI, this would be the way to go.
