Yesterday the Government began the implementation of Digital Terrestrial Television in the Dominican Republic in an event in which President Luis Abinader, together with Guido Gómez Mazarafrom the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel), pressed the “digital power” button that symbolizes the analog blackout.
The first phase of the process begins today in the Eastern region, in Greater Santo Domingo and in municipalities of the province Saint Christopher in the south of the country.

“From now on, open television in the Dominican Republic will give way to the digital format, marking the beginning of a new era in our history of communication. This change will revolutionize the way in which each citizen accesses television and will allow us to enjoy a high-quality signal in our homes,” highlighted Gómez Mazara.
This project, which began in 2003, is a fundamental step in the modernization of the media in the country, as it is expected to improve access to information, entertainment, culture and the quality of audio and images.
Gómez Mazara said that Indotel has worked with determination on this project.
The project, he said, includes the distribution by Indotel of 940 thousand signal converters or boxes in the homes of low-income people who still have televisions with antenna so that the images can be seen with better quality and sound, to guarantee that they access the new digital signal.
Until yesterday, Indotel staff, together with religious and community organizations, had distributed 500,000 signal converters in various areas.
The ignition was carried out in the Indotel Cultural Center in the Colonial City in the presence of personalities from various fields. It concluded with the artist’s performance Maridalia Hernandez.
The communicator Socorro Castellanos was recognized and the television presenter Yaqui Núñez and the producer Horacio La Madrid were posthumously recognized.
