▲Government announces size of medical school increase tomorrow Photo: Yonhap News The government is expected to hold a Health and Medical Policy Deliberation Committee (Revision Review) on the 6th and decide and announce a plan to increase the number of medical school admissions for the 2025 academic year by 1,500 to 2,000.
As there is great interest in how much the number of medical school students, which has been limited to 3,058 since 2006, will increase, it is highly likely that the announcement will be made on the same day.
The size of the increase is likely to be around 1,500 to 2,000 people.
Previously, the Ministry of Health and Welfare hinted at a long-term target for increasing the number of students on the 1st, saying, “Considering the supply and demand situation of 15,000 doctors in 2035, we will expand the number of medical school admissions from the 2025 school year.”
In fact, the outlook within and outside of the medical community and government is to secure an additional 15,000 doctors by 2035, an increase of at least 1,500 every year for the next 10 years.
Moreover, considering that it takes about 10 years to become a specialist after entering medical school, we cannot rule out the possibility of drastically increasing the number of students by 2,000 in the first year and adjusting the size thereafter.
The government’s will is stronger than ever.
The government expressed its strong will to promote the increase in medical schools by calling it ‘medical reform’, and established a hard-line response policy of immediately ordering doctors to return to work when they go on strike and disciplinary action if they do not comply.
At the same time, an essential medical policy package was put forward as a ‘carrot’, including a significant increase in fees for essential medical services, improved treatment of medical residents, and relief of the legal burden on doctors in the event of medical accidents.
At the last People’s Livelihood Debate, President Yoon strongly expressed his will to push forward, saying, “If we retreat from the medical reform desired by the majority of the people due to opposition or resistance from some, it would be abandoning the essential role of the state.”
Second Vice Minister of Health and Welfare Park Min-soo also said in a briefing, “I believe that if we fail this time, there will be no Republic of Korea, and we are making a solemn determination.”
