Updated just now

That is the main message from the government during a presentation of the news at St. Olav’s kindergarten in Sarpsborg on Tuesday.

– We are today launching a welfare boost for the whole country, which will benefit families with children from north to south, says the Prime Minister.

The monthly maximum price is currently NOK 3,000 per month. The new monthly price is reduced to NOK 2,000, and applies to all kindergarten children from the autumn of budget year 2024.

The calculation

For a family with two children, this means a reduction of NOK 18,700 in childcare costs per year. The price tag is in excess of 3 billion annually.

In addition to what the government believes is a sharp price reduction, it is planned to use money from the income from the salmon tax for even more favorable nursery prices in parts of rural Norway. This means that in 189 municipalities there will be a maximum price of NOK 1,500 starting in August 2024.

– We want to contribute to the desire to live and to live, says the Prime Minister.

Under press

It comes after the Prime Minister and the government have been under pressure because prices are rising and people’s finances are getting tighter. This week Frps Sylvi Listhaug went out in VG to call Finance Minister Trygve Slagsvold Vedum (Sp) the biggest food baron in the country.

– This is going to go straight into people’s everyday finances, says Vedum in the wake of the kindergarten news.

Sibling moderation

The governing parties Ap and Sp are keen to present today’s kindergarten news as a historic boost – 20 years after the kindergarten settlement in the Storting. Then the parties from both the right and the left came together to advocate for full kindergarten coverage and a maximum price – after several years of poor coverage and partly skyrocketing kindergarten prices.

– I am very proud that we can prioritize this at a time when people may need a little extra, says Minister of Education Tonje Brenna.

The managed budget leak comes six days before the election and from a government where both parties are struggling in the polls.

The government has already made kindergarten free for children number three. Since there is also a sibling moderation of 30 per cent for the second child, the maximum price a family has to pay for daycare – no matter how many children they have in daycare at the same time – will be NOK 3,400 a month with the new prices.

From before, kindergarten is already free for families in the action zone in Troms and Finnmark.
