American author Anne Rice died last night at the age of 80 from a heart attack, her son Christopher reported via social media. Rice became known to a wide audience with her 13-part novel series The Vampire Chronicles, which revolves around the fictional 18th-century French nobleman Lestat de Lioncourt, who turns into a vampire. The first volume appeared in 1976.
Two parts of the series were filmed in Hollywood: the successful Interview with the Vampire (1994, starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt) and Queen of the Damned (2002, starring singer Aaliyah).
