Largest ocean-going wooden sailboat and the loudest engines
The “Götheborg of Sweden” can be viewed at the Überseebrücke. The Harley Days run around the wholesale market, the big exit takes place on Sunday.
IThere is a lot going on in Hamburg this weekend: The world’s largest ocean-going wooden sailing ship, the “Götheborg of Sweden”, has arrived in the Port of Hamburg. The historic ship moored at the Überseebrücke on Friday in bright sunshine to the accompaniment of a gun salute and seaman’s chants from the crew. It can be viewed there this weekend (May 20/21) and on Tuesday (May 23).
There are 72 crew members on board – 21 professional seafarers and 51 paying fellow passengers who lend a hand. For the Swedish-flagged ship, this is the fifth stop after Sète, Gibraltar, Jersey and Rotterdam.
The ship owner is the Greencarrier Group, a Swedish logistics company. A subsidiary opened a new branch in Hamburg in April of this year. The logistics industry in Hamburg is strategically important and the ship’s visit to the Hanseatic city is therefore an important stopover, said a spokesman for the Greencarrier Group. Guests can view the sailor on three of the four days of berth. Tickets cost 15 euros for adults and 7.50 euros for children aged 4 and over.
Thousands of bikers have meanwhile come to the Elbe for the Hamburg Harley Days – with pleasant temperatures and lots of sunshine. The three-day biker festival at the Hamburg wholesale market is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and the 120th birthday of the US motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson.
The event on the approximately 40,000 square meter site around the halls of the wholesale market is not just for die-hard motorcyclists. There are stunt shows, a competition for the most beautiful customized motorcycle, a Harley-Davidson history exhibition and many concerts. Visitors can get an overview of what is going on on the site by taking a ride on the Ferris wheel.
On Friday, the hard rock bands Bonfire from Germany and Nazareth from Great Britain (“Dream On”, “Love Hurts”) took to the stage. On Sunday afternoon, the big parade through the city starts with several thousand bikes. The roads affected will be closed for about 30 minutes during the exit period. According to the organizer, the Hamburg Harley Days are one of the largest biker city events in Europe.
