The week after IFK Göteborg’s lead-heavy loss at home against fellow Varbergs Bois is almost over – and this afternoon a new match awaits when league leader IF Elfsborg is at the door.
Gustav Svensson says that Monday’s loss was felt for a few days, but that the batteries have now been recharged.
– The first days are of course very hard, but we have no choice but to just move forward and look ahead. Just do it and like the situation. It’s a very fun match that awaits with a good away team. We are very grateful for that, says Svensson.
The 36-year-old says that the cohesion and feeling within the squad is still unchanged and good.
– That’s it, absolutely. We are working and training hard to just get this turnaround and to start winning games. It is the most important and vital thing in our job. It is clear that it has been under all criticism.
Feel like you can beat the league leaders away from home?
– Yes absolutely. But now, in the situation we are in, every game becomes a final. For us, every match is equally important. We are in dire need of points, so we look at every game the same.
The midfield veteran gets the support of coach Jens Askou, who also believes that it might suit IFK Göteborg to be the underdog.
– We want to compete with the best teams. We do that against Elfsborg. Sometimes it is perhaps easier to play against great teams. That’s how it is sometimes, but it will be a tough opponent. They have had a lot of luck and coincidences that have gone in their direction, but have also had a great season, says the coach.
When Jens Askou is also asked how the team has progressed after Monday’s blow, he quickly waves it all away.
– Yes, yes … I get questions almost every day about “how are you?” and “how’s the team?” I don’t know… That’s the way it is. When it rains, the sky is gray – and when the sun shines, the sky is blue. That’s life. You have to live when it rains but also get ready for tomorrow, when the sun shines. It’s a basic thing, says Askou.
– We can’t talk about how tough it is every week. Just accept it and drive.
Do you think it is wrong that there is so much focus on it?
– I understand that people talk about it all the time. For you, it’s about creating a feeling among fans and those who aren’t involved, because otherwise it won’t be interesting. Right now, it is very interesting that IFK is not doing well in the table. But for us it is important to accept the situation and continue.
