Got burns after laser treatment – the response from the clinic shocks them

In the summer of 2020, Anne-Marie Svenningsen was to remove hair on her upper lip. She booked an hour at the Laser Clinics Norway clinic in Kristiansand.

– I had received laser treatment elsewhere on my body there before, and was pleased with the result.

But this time it did not go quite as expected.

– I felt that it was worse and it smelled more scorched than it had done before.

It was only when she woke up the next morning that she realized that the treatment had not gone as it used to.

Anne-Marie had blisters on both her lip and nose.

She went to the local medical center. There, the doctor thought that she had suffered a second-degree burn after the laser treatment.

– Had to wear caps all summer

Anne-Marie contacted Laser Clinics and sent pictures of the blisters on her face.

– I was told that everything would get better quickly, so I believed in them.

See the answer from the clinic further down.

But that was not the case.

After a week, the blisters burst. Anne-Marie says that yellow fluid came out of the wounds she had received after the treatment.

– I could not walk like that, I had to stay away from all the sun and had to wear caps all summer.

For several weeks she had ugly scabs on her face.

Laser Clinics offered Anne-Marie a consultation so that they could assess the wounds she had received on her face.

When she showed up, she asked for her money back for the failed treatment.

– I was told that it was not possible to get the money back, because the wounds seemed to heal well.

Now, a year and a half after the treatment, Anne-Marie still has scars on her lip and nose.

– It looks like I have a constant cold. Even though it is not very visible to others, it affects my self-esteem.

– Sick hurts

TV 2 helps you has been in contact with several girls who say they have received wounds after treatments at Laser Clinics. One of them is Charlotte Stave Handeland.

She visited Laser Clinics for the first time in February 2019, for help in removing hair on her legs.

She was prepared that the treatment could cost her a few thousand kroner, but thought it would be worth it.

In June 2020, she was at the clinic to undergo another treatment at Laser Clinics. She quickly noticed that not everything was as it used to be.

– This time it welded more than it had done before, and it hurt to wear clothes after the treatment.

Charlotte says that at first she did not realize that the marks she got on her legs after the treatment were burns.

She therefore withdrew and received another treatment at the end of October of the same year.

– Then it was completely sick pain, even worse than last time.

Charlotte contacted the clinic again, and sent them pictures of the injuries she had received after the treatment.

– Then I was told that this could happen sometimes, but that it would go away.

– Black campaign

The owner of Laser Clinics Norway, Filipe Santos, denies that the injuries occurred after treatment with them. He further refers to his lawyer Per Danielsen.

«In general, all allegations against Laser Clinics about injuries and “burns” can be traced back to the deception of an envious and less qualified competitor who spreads false information and makes false accusations. The girls who stand out have also been misled

«After studying some of the images, it can be stated that a different type of laser has been used than the one my client uses.»

Lawyer Danielsen writes in an email to TV 2 help you.

He claims that the girls’ allegations that they have suffered burns after treatment at Laser Clinics, are part of a smear campaign organized by a competing clinic.

TV2 helps you has been in contact with the clinic Danielsen claims is behind the smear campaign.

– We have nothing to do with this. Neither Charlotte nor Anne-Marie have received treatments from us. Laser Clinics must be responsible for what they do themselves, says the head of the local clinic in Sørlandet.

– I have never removed hair with a laser anywhere other than at Laser Clinics, says Anne-Marie.

Charlotte states the same.

Confronted with this, Danielsen replies that this does not apply to Charlotte or Anne-Marie.

Danielsen also writes:

«The circulating images most likely show reactions due to self-tanning or the use of a solarium. If hair removal is desired, it is important to come to the treatment with pale skin that is not affected by sun, solarium or self-tanning cream. Then reactions may occur which are seen in some of the pictures

Charlotte and Anne-Marie deny that they took a solarium or used self-tanning during the time period they received treatment at Laser Clinics.

– I have not used self-tanning, or solarium since I got married in 2013, says Charlotte.

She adds that she has only taken a tanning bed twice in her life, both times before 2013.

Per Danielsen also writes:

«It is easy to prove that the treatment at the Laser Clinic has not led to reactions, if the girls are willing to be photographed naked. They have removed hair in the “Brazilian” way. If they have the hair removal imaged around and on the vagina, everyone will be able to see that there are no reactions created by Laser Clinics in this intimate area. Thus, the reactions on other parts of the body MUST have come due to self-tanning or tanning on other parts of the body, or because a laser from a competitor with poorer quality has been used

He also writes about Anne-Marie:

«Anne-Marie had a reaction only on the nose and upper lip, most likely due to previous herpes outbreaks there

Anne-Marie says to TV 2 helps you that she does not have herpes outbreaks.

Must report damage

According to section chief in the Directorate for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (DSA), Lill Tove Nilsen, laser treatment can lead to wounds and injuries in some cases.

– We know that damage can occur when removing hair with a laser. This may be due to the device being set incorrectly, or the skin reacting differently than intended. The customer should also be aware of this when taking such treatment.

According to the Radiation Protection Regulations, the clinic must report to the DSA if injuries occur during laser treatment.

– The clinic has a duty to report injuries after treatment, but there are no companies that have registered such injuries in the last three years, Nilsen states.

Danielsen answers:

“Nothing has happened at Laser Clinics that has provided a basis for reporting to the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority. False claims should not be reported there. “

– The worst thing is not to be believed

Both Charlotte and Anne-Marie feel that the worst thing about the whole experience is not being believed by the clinic.

– I just want other young girls not to experience this. It is so uncomfortable not to be believed when you stand there with burns all over your legs, says Charlotte.

– It has felt very humiliating, thinks Anne-Marie.

Both girls still have marks after the treatments.

– If the skin is damaged forever, I do not know what I do, says Charlotte.
