Due to the close presence of fire, nearby streets were closed and train traffic from the Eastern Railway Station was suspended – the track is right next to the university.
– We are in contact with the university authorities. The most important thing for today is that there is no information about any injured people. Both the academy’s employees and office workers in the neighboring building, located next to the fire, were evacuated – said Jacek Wójcicki, the president of Gorzów Wielkopolski.

The building dates back to the early 19th century
In a conversation with a TVN24 reporter, the mayor of the city, Jacek Wójcicki, said that “the scale of damage after the fire is enormous.”
– One of the most important buildings in the city burned down. It is the second oldest facility in Gorzów. I think it will be tens, if not hundreds of millions of zlotys of losses. The entire building is flooded, and the roof and top floor are burned, explained Wójcicki.
The President of Gorzów appealed to Prime Minister Donald Tusk for financial assistance and support in eliminating losses and rebuilding the over 200-year-old historic building in Gorzów.

– It is difficult to say today what condition this building will be in. The city will support the academy in every possible way in its reconstruction, but we certainly won’t be able to cope on our own. There will be our joint appeal – mine, the university authorities, to the Minister of Science, to the Prime Minister, because without government support we simply will not succeed – he added.

The building was built at the beginning of the 19th century on the initiative of the King of Prussia, Frederick William II, and was intended as a care and educational facility. It operated until 1920. In the following years, the building housed the Prussian Agricultural Research and Experimental Institute, and after World War II – the Institute of Cultivation, Fertilization and Soil Science, later renamed the Institute of Plant Breeding and Acclimatization.
