In the KBS2 epic drama ‘Goryeo Khitan War’, a special project for the 50th anniversary of KBS Public Broadcasting, which aired on the afternoon of the 12th, Mokjong (played by Baek Seong-hyeon), who ignored warnings of imminent war, was shocked by a fire that broke out during a banquet.
When Empress Dowager Cheonchu discussed the successor with her subjects, Mokjong (played by Baek Seong-hyeon) appeared and announced, “The person who will be the next emperor is Daeyangwongun.” In response, Empress Dowager Tianqiu said, “Da Liang Yuan is definitely alive. He asked his subjects, emphasizing that “the decision on the succession to the imperial family will be discussed with the subjects at a later date.” Empress Dowager Tianqiu said, “Nothing will change by doing this. “The next emperor will be Seongsang’s younger brother,” he warned.
Prince Wang Sun (played by Kim Dong-jun) did not know what to do in front of the food given to him by Empress Dowager Cheonchu (played by Lee Min-young). Wang Sun said, “I was fasting. She refused, saying, “I can’t eat food now,” but the lady who brought the food pressured her to have some tea. Soldiers surrounded the monks outside, and the royal court pressured them, saying, “If you don’t eat, we will all die together.”

Wang Sun then encountered a group of soldiers and escaped danger by hiding in a cave while running away. King Mokjong, who was unaware of this fact, ignored the words of his subjects that they should send troops to protect Daeryangwongun, and sent Lee Joo-jeong (played by Lee Changjik) to make sure that Empress Dowager Cheonchu would not harm Daeryangwongun.
Mokjong goes to Kim Chi-yang’s (Gong Jeong-hwan) house and strangles her, saying, “Why do you keep being greedy? “Why don’t you know how to be satisfied?” he said angrily, “this is the emperor’s order. Stop here. If you take even one step further, I will carry your neck and drink your mother’s tears.”
Lee Ju-jeong, whom Mokjong had sent to Daegyangwongun, turned out to be Empress Dowager Cheonchu. When Lee Jujeong saw that Yangyangwongun had still not been captured, he returned and lied to Mokjong that Daeryangwongun was in peace.
After hearing the news about the government being in disarray, Gang Jo (played by Lee Won-jong) sent a letter to Mokjong asking him to straighten up the government as war was imminent, but Mokjong ignored him, saying, “Tell him not to worry about Gaegyeong and to focus on his duties.”
Kang Gam-chan (Choi Soo-jong) shed tears while listening to the story of the people who were taken to the Khitan. Gang Gam-chan predicted that the Khitans would definitely invade Goryeo again. As Gang Gam-chan predicted, the Khitan emperor decided to please his mother by conquering Goryeo as his mother’s illness gradually worsened.
King Mokjong held a banquet in the palace, and at that time, Empress Dowager Cheonchu’s people tried to set fire to the mountain where Yang Daeyongwengun fled to kill him. But then it rained and put out the fire, and the soldiers threatened that the monks would be killed if they did not come out.
Wang Sun persuaded the weak-hearted soldier to change his clothes and head to another temple to deliver the news to King Mokjong. Afterwards, Wang Sun returned to the temple and told his court lady that Mokjong had found out about everything, and said, “Quit everything and leave the temple. Then I will pretend it never happened. “We either live together or we all die together,” he threatened.
