Goro: The Unbeatable Four-Armed Warrior of Mortal Kombat

One of the great differences of Mortal Kombat is the fact that it presents fighters who are not entirely human, creating situations that may even seem unequal. And in the first game, one of the enemies that many feared was Goro, the four-armed warrior.

Goro didn’t appear in many games in the franchise compared to names like Liu Kang, Sub-Zero and Scorpion, but he is certainly a character well remembered by many players. Therefore, below we bring you some curiosities regarding the representative of Exoterra.

1. Unbeatable Warrior

In the story presented in the first Mortal Kombat, Goro appears as the Grand Champion of the tournament, having been undefeated for 500 years. Due to his combat skills, he became a general in the armies of Outworld, acting under the command of Emperor Shao Kahn.

His enormous strength and brutality were feared by everyone, until the moment he was canonically defeated by Liu Kang when trying to defend his title for the tenth time. This caused him to disappear because he felt ashamed and dishonored, needing time to compose himself and get back on track.

2. Strength that comes from race

One of the factors that explains Goro’s extraordinary strength is the fact that he belongs to the Shokan race, which has a lineage of half-humanoid and half-dragon members with four arms. This also makes him larger than a conventional human, which in itself can frighten several opponents.

In fact, he is not the only fighter in Mortal Kombat with these characteristics, since throughout the history of the franchise we have had the chance to see other four-armed characters, such as Sheva and Kintaro. In fact, there is a difference between Goro and the latter, since the villain we face in Mortal Kombat 2 has skin more similar to that of a tiger and is from the Tigar lineage, while the other two are representatives of the Draco.

3. Peace Warrior

The history of Mortal Kombat showed that several characters and even different races lived in constant war over the years, and in the second group we can see the Shokan against the Centaurs.

After Shao Kahn was defeated, Goro emerged again with a new purpose: to improve the lives of his people. However, for this to happen it was necessary to continue a war against the Centaurs, a situation that changed only when Kitana appeared proposing a peace agreement between the two groups.

Another point is that, after Shinok’s failed invasion and the release of Edenia from his command, Goro made an alliance with the Edenians and even signed a peace agreement with the Centaurs, showing that he was willing to act differently.

4. Appearances in other games

Goro made his debut in the first Mortal Kombat, but also appears in other titles in the franchise. Are they:

Mortal Kombat: Trilogy;Mortal Kombat 4;Mortal Kombat Gold;Mortal Kombat: Deception;Mortal Kombat Unchained;Mortal Kombat: Armageddon;Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks;Mortal Kombat 9;Mortal Kombat X.

In fact, the last game in the relationship in which Goro appears brings a difference that we will discuss in the following point.

5. Playable Character

Em Mortal Kombat X, Goro becomes a playable character, giving us the opportunity to finally use his skills against other opponents. Although, he appeared as a DLC fighterand you have to pay to put him in the list of selectable warriors.

As he is an additional character, his presence does not have any significant impact on the game’s story, but there is still a background to his presence. Here, the Shokan were exempt when choosing a side in the war between Kotal Kahn and Mileena, but Goro himself took charge of defeating Kahn and taking the throne later.

6. Returning to being a villain

Alright, Goro signed a peace treaty and apparently stayed good for a while. However, years after the events of MK: Deadly AllianceShao Kahn proposes a new deal with Goro by saving him from certain death after the four-armed warrior was attacked by Noob Saibot.

In the end, Goro ends up agreeing to Shao Khan’s terms and arranges for another Shokan to be buried in his place. This way, his path was free to return to acting as an ally of the emperor.

7. Appearance in other media

Finally, Goro was also a character that we had the chance to see in the first film of Mortal Kombatreleased there in 1995. He was played by Kevin Michael Richardson, who needed a costume above the torso to create the prince’s additional arms and head.

He is seen defeating some opponents in the feature film, with his destiny slightly altered compared to the canonical events: while in the game his first defeat is to Liu Kang, in the film the victorious man after facing the four-armed warrior is Johnny Cage.

He also appears in the edition released in 2021, where he has a confrontation with Cole, the protagonist of the new version.
