«In our concert performance in the script and direction of Mārtiņš Kagainis and in the scenography of Elīna Milta Niedrāja, the most beautiful melodies of Sarsuel with temperamental dance rhythms and witty dialogues accompanied by guitar, violin, alto, cello, clarinet, chestnut and piano will intertwine. The light direction created by Kārlis Kaupuzis will take the viewer on a colorful journey from the smoky Madrid tavern to the place of the Seville market in color and sun, ”says opera singer Anta Jankovska.
An interesting and eclectic bouquet of artists participates in the concert performance: soprano Anta Jankovska, tenor Mihails Čuļpajevs, baritone Nauris Indzeris, LNOB ballet soloists Baiba Kokina and Raimonds Martinovs, actors Zane Daugiņa and Egils Melbārdis, guitarist Kaspars Zpītis Ivars Bezprozvanovs, young clarinetist Pēteris Eduards Kalniņš, percussionist Uģis Krūskops and pianist Helēna Laukmane. Arrangements for this concert performance were created by Italian conductor and arranger Enrico Gullino.
“Sarsuel is not a comedy, it is a small fable in which Italy is sung and portrayed in imitation,” said Pedro Calderon de la Barca in the 17th century. In the second half of the 19th century, the world was introduced to a new genre of indigenous theater, which was broadly similar to the newborn Italian opera. The meaning of the term “zarzuela”, which literally means “bush” (“zarzas”) in the Castilian dialect, originated from the place where theatrical performances took place to entertain the court of Infanta Fernando, who usually rested on his return from the hunt “Palacete de la Zarzuela », On the outskirts of Madrid, in a very bushy area. From the beginning, Sarsuel was an eclectic genre in which music, song and dance merged with prose theater and recitativo secco in a place that was considered boring.
However, it was not until the second half of the 19th century that a national school was born in Spain with national, popular rhythms, the basic principles and characteristics of true sarsu, reflecting an authentic Iberian reality in the texts and drama.
“In the darkest and wettest time of December, we invite Latvian viewers on an unforgettable musical journey in Spain, full of sun, joy and passion!” says the creators of the show.
