Ambassador for the 2022 World Cup, Khalid Salman, has caused a stir among the people of world football. The former Qatari international player sees LGBTQ as a deviation and illegal.
“Homosexuality is haram. Do you know what haram means?” Salman told the German media, ZDF.
“I’m not a devout Muslim either, but why is it haram? Because it destroys the mind,” he said.
Salman also asked LGBTQ groups who want to participate in the 2022 World Cup to accept the Qatari rules. The Middle Eastern country enforces strict rules for fans, ranging from restrictions on alcohol to banning free sex.
Salman’s remarks received harsh comments from the German national team midfielder, Leon Goretzka. He thinks Salman has old-fashioned thinking that he makes a mistake with his LGBTQ claim.
“It’s very overwhelming. It’s a picture of a man from another millennium,” Goretzka said. BBC.
“These words make you think these things could be said by a World Cup ambassador just before the World Cup,” he blurted out.
The criticisms also come from the President German Football Association (DFB), Bernd Neunendorf. He even urged FIFA to verify this problem.
“This statement discredits the entire LGBTIQ community and reveals a deeply problematic relationship with human rights,” said Neunendorf.
“FIFA should seriously consider whether its ethics committee should address this issue,” he said.
