The organization had opted for a two-minute silence as a tribute to the retired economics teacher at Arentheem College in Velp. Flowers, lights and candles were the setting for a memorial with tears and goosebumps.
Almost everyone present stood with lights, candles and flowers along a number of streets in the Arnhem Spijkerkwartier to commemorate him. Kruitwagen was kicked and beaten by a group of boys right in front of his house on Spijkerstraat last week after they had first pulled him off his bicycle.
The man died in hospital later that evening. The police have arrested eight suspects, aged 15 to 18 years old.
Arnhem’s mayor Ahmed Marcouch was present at the memorial on Saturday evening to express his condolences. “This monstrous kicking match has a huge impact on the city’s residents. The loss of an Arnhemmer is big. ”
Michael Bouwman – a good friend of the deceased Arnhemmer – has no words for the senseless violence of which Kruitwagen has become a victim. “I get goosebumps every time I think about him, look at the sea of flowers or look at the overwhelming amount of lights and candles around his house.”
