Google’s Pixel 9a could bring a major improvement in photos

While we’re still several months away from the Pixel 9a‘s rumored launch, we’re already getting some notable details about the upcoming mid-range Android smartphone. The latest report suggests that the smartphone could share a key camera component with the recently launched Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

A photo module worthy of a flagship

The Pixel 8a (test) arrived with a dual photo module consisting of a 64 MP main lens and a 13 MP ultra wide angle. The first sensor was carried over from the Pixel 7a (review) and proved to be a significant upgrade in the budget Pixel range, delivering impressive imaging quality in the high-end category. Even more impressive, a new report fromAndroid Headlines indicates that Google plans to equip the Pixel 9a with an even more powerful main lens.

The outlet claims that the upcoming Pixel 9a will feature a 48 MP primary lens similar to Google’s current foldable Pixel 9 Pro. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the same as the 50 MP lens in the Pixel 9 Pro (test), but the 1/2-inch sensor with a wider f/1.7 aperture is designed to fit into a slimmer chassis while still delivering premium photo quality.

If paired with OIS and a faster autofocus system, the Pixel 9a would also benefit from the same fantastic low-light camera as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Even so, we could see Google taking advantage of its advanced software algorithm, optimizing the camera for most shooting conditions.

What other changes for the Pixel 9a?

The Pixel 9a will have the same ultra-wide-angle lens on the back and the same 13 MP selfie lens as its predecessor. However, it will receive the new AI-powered Add Me feature that debuted with the Pixel 9 lineup. This tool allows you to take group photos and include the photographer by combining two separate photos, resulting in a single photo, but with everyone in the frame.

Aside from the camera upgrade, renders of the Pixel 9a have shown that it will feature a redesigned chassis with a flat rear panel that ditches the camera island. This is probably why Google is opting for a new camera. Elsewhere, it’s expected to be powered by a toned-down Tensor G3 SoC similar to that of the Pixel 9.

Based on Google’s historic release schedule, the Pixel 9a is expected to be announced in the spring of next year, although developments indicate that the affordable smartphone could arrive sooner.
