Google Rolls Out Second April Update for Pixel Devices

Addressing Network Issues

Google has recently introduced a new software update for its Pixel devices, including Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Fold, 8, and 8 Pro. This unexpected update, referred to as the “second April update,” has been released to resolve network-related problems that a number of Pixel owners have been encountering.

Updates for Specific Devices:

On April 17, Google published new factory and OTA (Over-The-Air) images for the following devices:

  • Pixel 7
  • Pixel 7 Pro
  • Pixel 7a
  • Pixel Fold
  • Pixel 8
  • Pixel 8 Pro

Rollout and Confirmation:

One day after the factory and OTA images were made available, on-device OTAs started to be deployed to Verizon customers. Verizon recently updated its Pixel changelogs, stating that the update brings performance improvements for LTE call/data as well as network-related issues.

Google has confirmed the rollout of this new update, mentioning that it provides network stability and performance enhancements. In addition, Google Support reached out to certain customers via email, notifying them about the update’s availability for “Pixel 7 and newer phones.”

This update will be gradually released globally over the next few weeks to cover all affected regions and carriers.

Reports of Missed Calls and Text Messages:

Several users have reported encountering issues with missed calls and text messages in recent months. This update aims to address and rectify such problems effectively.

Rollout Status:

As of now, the second April update, which is relatively small in size (approximately 7 MB), has only been released to Pixel users under the Verizon network. The standard “Check for updates” option does not seem to initiate the update process. Google Fi users have not reported seeing this update, while AT&T customers are yet to receive it. A few users have taken to manually sideloading the OTA image to update their devices.
