At the end of 2023, Google announced the arrival of a significant operational change for the Timeline tool (Your journeys, in French) of Google Maps. Almost a year later, in November 2024, concrete things seem to have started. Several users have in fact received an email from the firm to encourage them to quickly make a decision based on the functionality data. Since 2015, this allows you to consult a history of your trips and places visited recorded using your smartphone’s GPS.

A change to Google Maps for better privacy
Automatically saved in the cloud for synchronization across multiple devices, this geolocation data will now only be kept locally on the user’s terminal. In any case from December 1st (or even November 19th as some emails seem to indicate). Additionally, only the last three months of history will now be kept by default. Everything else will be deleted, hence the email mentioned above to be able to save your data before its deletion.
Be careful though, because users report that the link used only erased all their data. Caution is therefore advised while waiting for a fix. It is also possible to use the Google Takeout tool to export your location history.
Optional settings for the Timeline
In addition, via the email sent, Google offers to continue to keep its browsing data indefinitely over time, or according to several time limit settings before deletion: 3, 18 or 36 months. If in the future you wish to view, for example, a trip made during a vacation several years ago, this will still be possible provided you have correctly set the Timeline.
