Google Gemini Boosts Google Assistant, But With a Catch
Google is gradually integrating its powerful Gemini AI into the google Assistant, promising a smarter home experience. The tech giant initially hinted at this upgrade in August, and now a limited rollout is underway, focusing on enhancing the Assistant’s ability to answer general knowledge questions with AI-powered responses. This means your everyday requests, like controlling smart home devices or playing music, will still be handled by the familiar Google Assistant. However, for more complex queries, you’ll notice a subtle chime before receiving a Gemini-powered answer.
The rollout, first reported by 9to5Google, is currently limited to specific devices and users. Only owners of Nest Audio and Nest Mini (2nd generation) smart speakers are eligible. Unluckily, users with Nest smart displays or older speaker models are excluded from this initial phase.Furthermore, access is restricted to participants in Google Home’s Public Preview program who are also Nest Aware subscribers and have opted into the Experimental AI features. Even within the Preview program, this option isn’t universally available.
According to Google’s support documentation, those selected for the Experimental AI features will receive a notification within their Google Home app. This notification will include a toggle to activate the feature and begin experiencing the Gemini-enhanced Google Assistant. This phased approach allows Google to gather valuable user feedback and refine the technology before a wider release.
While the full potential of Gemini remains to be seen in this context, the initial rollout suggests a cautious yet promising step towards a more bright and responsive smart home experience. The limitations highlight Google’s commitment to a controlled rollout, prioritizing user experience and data collection before widespread deployment.
