The cloud storage Google Drive offers a quick view for many files stored in it, with which the individual media can be viewed without downloading. This also applies to videos, for which there has been a video player that is very reminiscent of YouTube for many years. Now there is a major redesign that moves away from the original and instead uses a more modern interface.
If you open a video file in Google Drive, you can in many cases play it directly in the browser interface, using the player visible in the screenshot above. From a purely visual perspective, this is a YouTube player with limited functionality. Most users are used to this player and so it is a good thing if it is also used on Google Drive. But after many years it seems like they want to replace it.
For the first users, the above player now appears in a completely new look. Of course, the basic ingredients remain the same, such as the full screen and the progress bar. But this one shows that it is no longer in YouTube red, but in white and has a progress bar. The controls at the bottom have been changed, are displayed in individual areas and offer additional functions that were not available at first click in the other player.
There are no new functions in the player and these are hardly to be expected for a player that is only used as a preview. Visually, the player is heavily based on Google Vids, which is certainly no coincidence. The new design is currently being shown to the first users, but it may still take a long time for it to be widely rolled out.
