“Google Chat for Android Now Allows Users to Star Messages”

Google Chat for Android users can now star messages, a feature that was previously only available on the desktop version. This update allows users to mark and save important messages for easy access later on. However, some users have expressed concerns about the crowded appearance of the floating bar due to the addition of an overflow button.

To star a message, users simply need to long-press on the message in a 1:1 conversation, group chat, or Spaces conversation. This feature is applicable to both received and sent messages and will be indicated next to the date.

To access the saved messages, users can tap on the new three-dot overflow button at the end of the floating bar. This will bring up a sheet with two options: “Mentions” and “Starred.” The “Starred” feed displays the conversation and text of the saved messages.

Implementing this feature required Google to make an interesting design decision. Instead of adding Mentions and Starred to the navigation drawer, which is already used for status/availability and settings, they opted for the overflow button on the floating bar.

The ability to star messages is currently being rolled out in Google Chat for Android (version 2024.01.21.x) as well as in Gmail. It is expected to be available for iOS users in the near future.

Google Chat is a communication platform that offers features such as direct messaging, group chats, and Spaces conversations. This update enhances the user experience by allowing them to easily save and access important messages.

In conclusion, Google Chat for Android now includes the ability to star messages, a feature that was previously only available on desktop. This update provides users with a convenient way to mark and save important messages for future reference. While some users have expressed concerns about the crowded appearance of the floating bar, overall, this feature enhances the functionality of Google Chat and improves user experience.
