A new one could come Champions League, with the proposal that will be debated this week in UEFA, for the project of a special format that would start in 2024, which would affect half of the contest.
By March 31, the entity will discuss the idea of modifying the first round, in its Executive Committee, with the aim of lowering the spirits of some supporters for the so-called ‘European Super League’, which would be organized by the strongest clubs on the continent.
The new format for the Champions League, will change the group stage to a ‘league-like’ system, increasing its participants from 32 to 36, with 5 or 6 places for each country and four quotas will be distributed in this way: two by UEFA coefficient, one for the fifth best League and another for the best League without a direct representative.
“Each team will play 10 games against different teams and the first eight will go to the eighth and, from the remaining 9 to 24, they will play a playoff to decide the other eight who access the eighth“, explained the chain COPE, of Spain.
If the new format is approved, it will be in effect from 2024 to 2033, which it will be a total change to the competition, which has had a group round for decades.
