Smokers cannot, from this Thursday in Galicia, light a cigarette unless they can maintain a safety distance of two meters. Therefore, it is not allowed to smoke while walking down the street if there are other pedestrians and hardly on a terrace if there are more clients. This also includes vapers.
The measure, which has been underway from zero hours this Thursday, is supported by the mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, who, although he continues to miss the dialogue with the Xunta on issues regarding the coronavirus, supports and shares the decision of the regional president.
Vigo, in fact, wants to be a pioneer city in smoke-free spaces and it is that before COVID-19 it had already considered eliminating tobacco from Balaídos and the beaches. This ordinance is underway and could begin to be effective this summer, and although in principle they are considered smoke-free beaches, Samil Rodas and O Vao, for the moment, with the measure of the Xunta, they will all be.
According to studies, the droplets of saliva that travel with the smoke are dangerous, and even more so when the cases of coronavirus continue to grow in Galicia, and also in Vigo. But these are not the only reasons, it also seeks to protect smokers since the handling of tobacco that we put in the mouth is an added risk of contagion, in addition to which it means having to put on and take off the mask.
Meanwhile, on the street, the smoking ban has done quite well, and although it seems crazy to some, the majority believe that it is a good security measure despite the fact that they are late.
