Goodbye to Epic Games: Sergiy Galyonkin’s Departure and the Future of Epic 5.0

He is saying goodbye to Epic Games after less than eight years Sergiy Galyonkinwhich launched in April 2016 Steam Spy. The site automatically collected data from Steam profiles, analyzed it, and generated various statistics, including game sales and average play time. He joined Epic as Head of Publishing for Eastern Europe in February 2016 and was promoted to Director of Publishing Strategy in August 2017.

The knowledge from Steam Spy was used by Galyonkin in the development of a competing store Epic Games Store, which was introduced to the world in December 2018. In the same year, Steam improved its privacy protection and cut off Steam Spy from data. Now the paths of the two diverge. Galyonkin explained that it’s not a good fit for where Epic Games is going. He thanked his former colleagues and Tim Sweeney, Epic’s CEO and one of the company’s founders, for the opportunity to participate in Epic 4.0. At the same time, he admitted that for the new version, which he refers to as Epic 5.0, is not a suitable person. This phase is supposed to require a different type of people.

“Now Epic is on its way to transform from a game developer, engine creator and publisher to a platform – Epic 5.0,” he wrote Galyonkin without explaining what exactly he means by the new phase of Epic. Instead, he thanked Epic for more than $144 million donated to charities in Ukraine and emphasized that Epic was one of the first companies to make such a gesture. Galyonkin intends to stay in the video game industry and looks forward to having more to say.

In the post, he recalled the successes he achieved with Epic. He called Fortnite a phenomenon that proved that free-to-play games can work without pay-to-win elements and be successful. At the Epic Games Store, he again highlighted that with a revenue share of 88/12, they challenged the status quo in game distribution.

Galyonkin’s departure may be related to the dismissal of hundreds of employees. Only last week did Epic admit that Fortnite is making less and the company is spending more money. In order to stabilize the finances, the company had to lay off 870 people, which is approximately 16% of all employees.

A month ago, the creative director left Epic Donald Mustard. One of the main creators of Fortnite has retired.
