goodbye to classic USB-A ports

Apple plans to refresh its computer lineup this fall with new processors M4currently only present in the latest generation of iPad Pro. The Cupertino company wants to gradually integrate these new chips into all its computers to support Apple Intelligence. By the end of the year, the MacBook Pro, iMac et Mac mini should be updated, followed by the rest of Apple’s lineup in early 2024.

Mac mini: a major overhaul

Among the computers mentioned, the Mac mini will undergo the most significant transformation. While the MacBook Pro and iMac will only see a processor change in their current chassis, the Mac mini will be completely redesigned. The computer will retain its chassis in aluminium cubic with rounded corners, but with clearly reduced dimensions, it evokes an imprint of 9,3 × 9,3 mm against 17 × 17 cm Currently.

Modernized connectivity

In addition to the size reduction, the connectivity will also be modified. According to Mark Gurman Bloomberg: Mac mini to lose all ports USB-A classics for the benefit of ports USB-C more modern – two in the front and three in the back. The computer should also include a port HDMIa headphone jack 3,5 mm and a port Ethernet.

The Mac mini will thus become one of the first desktop computers unable to accommodate a classic USB key or any accessory with a USB-A connector without an adapter. Apple initiated this trend in 2015 with the MacBook 12″which only had one USB-C port. Even the latest generations of MacBook Pro did not reinstate USB-A, although Apple did reintroduce the HDMI port, memory card reader, and charging port MagSafe.

Launch imminent?

Apple will present new iPhone, Apple Watch et AirPods next week, while the new computers are expected a month later at a separate event. However, a recent tip from Mark Gurman suggests that Apple could start selling the Mac mini with the M4 chip in early September, with the more powerful version with the M4 Pro chip arriving in October. This would imply that the new Apple computers could also be unveiled as early as next week.
