His wife Christine shared early Monday morning German time via Facebook with the fact that dear Werner passed away that night: “RIP, my love.”

The emigrant had previously operated his “Joe’s German Restaurant & Schnitzel House” in Sulfur Springs, Texas, about 100 kilometers east of Dallas, for many years.

It was originally planned that the couple would slowly say goodbye to their well-deserved retirement with the sale of the restaurant. But the corona pandemic came and thwarted them.

A few months ago it became known that Werner Boesel’s health was not good. “Goodbye Germany” broadcaster VOX announced in the sad news that he had a severe form of leukemia.

“Only stem cell therapy can save me, but my heart is too weak,” he told the team recently. “You will be missing, Werner,” wrote the crew on Monday.

After years of struggle, Boesel finally received the green card confirmation for a permanent residence in Texas in mid-2018. Before the decision was made, his American wife Christine said: “I was always afraid that my Werner would one day be expelled.”

Within a few hours, hundreds of fans of the VOX-Emigrant series expressed their condolences to widow Christine. “A fine, nice person,” wrote one woman, “Werner was a fine fellow, we knew him personally” another. “I liked him very much and was always happy to see him at Good Bye Germany,” was also to be read.

The docu-soap “Goodbye Germany” has been filmed since 2006 and is broadcast once a week on VOX. The TV show made people like Konny Reimann (65), Daniela Katzenberger (34), Jens Büchner († 49) or Currywurst man Chris Töpperwien (46) known.
