The two current FDP MPs from Lower Franconia can expect to belong to the next German Bundestag. The delegates nominated budget politician Karsten Klein from Aschaffenburg for third place at the party congress of the Bayern-FDP. The Lower Franconian FDP district chief had no opponent.
Health expert Andrew Ullmann from Würzburg prevailed in a runoff election for tenth place on the list with almost 60 percent against Max Funke-Kaiser, the state chairman of the Young Liberals from Augsburg. If the FDP achieves 10.2 percent across Bavaria as it did four years ago, this is a place that will certainly bring Ullmann back to Berlin.
Similar to the Greens a week earlier in Augsburg, the Liberals only met the candidates live on site: in the Munich Tonhalle. Most of the more than 400 delegates were connected digitally to the party congress. Up to twelve candidates applied for each of the 20 positions that were voted on individually. It was difficult for women to nominate because the FDP continues to refrain from quoting their list.
Daniel Föst tops the list
As was the case four years ago, the state chairman Daniel Föst from Munich heads the FDP Bayern list. Born in Schweinfurt, who grew up in the Rhön-Grabfeld district, won against his opponent Rebecca Herbe from Garmisch-Partenkirchen with 85 percent of the vote. Föst complained about the coronavirus policy of the federal government, stumbling “from lockdown to lockdown” instead of paying more attention to the “social and economic consequences of the pandemic” in addition to the health risks. Katja Hessel, chairwoman of the finance committee in the Bundestag from Nuremberg, occupies second place on the list.
The Lower Franconian top candidate Klein, who is applying for a direct mandate in the constituency of Aschaffenburg, called for a “new departure for this country”. It takes growth and innovation to cope with the consequences of the corona crisis. Ullmann, who is running as a direct candidate in Würzburg, said that he wanted to work for a health system “that focuses on people in their independence and freedom”.
No chance for Stauffenberg
Freedom and responsibility is also the life theme of Karl Graf Stauffenberg from Irmelshausen (Lkr. Rhön-Grabfeld). The grandson of the Hitler assassin Claus Schenk Graf Stauffenberg, who is a direct applicant for the FDP in the constituency of Bad Kissingen, tried to get into 13th place and at least into an outsider position. In the end, despite several attempts, he did not make it into the top 20, as did Werner Jannek from Marktheidenfeld, the direct candidate for Main-Spessart / Miltenberg.
