Launching KBS World on Tuesday (06/08/2021), the Associated Press (AP) News Agency reported that the FDA has recognized a new drug developed by the US pharmaceutical company, Biogen, with the Japanese pharmaceutical company, Eisai.
Previously, the FDA had given approval for Alzheimer’s disease drugs in 2003, but the drugs only treat anxiety or insomnia, so this is the first time approval for a drug that treats the cause of Alzheimer’s disease.
However, the new drug is not able to cure the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, but only delays the symptoms. People with Alzheimer’s should receive an injection of this drug Aduhel once every four weeks.
The AP reports that the FDA’s recognition of the new drug has sparked controversy over the development of new drugs for difficult-to-treat diseases, given warnings from experts about the risks of new drugs whose effects have not been proven.
Previously, an expert recommendation board from outside the FDA decided not to recommend approval of the new drug Biogen in November last year.
Meanwhile, the FDA asked Biogen to conduct further research to prove the effects of the new drug. It is interpreted that this new drug will be sold in the market if the effect has been proven.
