A new medical study has revealed a strange relationship between drugs for high cholesterol or those used to control type 2 diabetes and the chances of developing degenerative eye diseases associated with aging.
The study confirmed a close link between drugs for high cholesterol or those used to control type 2 diabetes and a decreased chance of developing age-related macular degeneration.
Participants over 50
All evaluation participants were over 50 and taking at least one of the following drugs: cholesterol-lowering drugs such as statins, diabetes control drugs including insulin, anti-inflammatory drugs excluding steroids, and levodopa, which treats disorders movement caused by neurodegenerative disease;
Reduces degenerative eye diseases
The results of the study, published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, showed that drugs used to lower cholesterol or control diabetes were associated with a 15% and 22% lower prevalence of any type of degenerative eye disease, respectively.
The study authors said in a statement, “More data is needed to confirm our findings so that we focus more on finding the causative factor and the potential interference of these drugs with pathophysiological pathways.”
