Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Pfizer and AstraZeneca are two of the six types of vaccines used as booster in Indonesia. Both also have their respective effectiveness against Covid-19 variants such as Omicron.
A Brazilian study looked at the effectiveness of the vaccine in people who received two doses of Sinovac who received booster with AstraZeneca, Pfizer-BioNTech or Johnson & Johnson vaccines.
The research was conducted in Brazil and the University of Oxford. The research team used 1,240 volunteers from San Paulo and Salvador Brazil.
They found two-dose Sinovac recipients with booster vaccines from vector platforms (Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca) and mRNA (Pfizer and Moderna) may be more potent against variants such as Delta and Omicron.
“This study provides an important option for policy makers in the many countries where inactivated vaccines (Sinovac and Sinopharm) have been used,” said study leader and director of the Oxford Vaccine Group, Andrew Pollard, quoted in the statement. ReutersTuesday (26/4/2022).
Viral vector vaccines such as AstraZeneca use weakened versions of other viruses to transmit genetic instructions. The goal, is to make a protein in the virus for which protection is sought.
On the other hand, Pfizer’s mRNA vaccine will deliver a genetic transcript with instructions for making viral proteins. This is useful for teaching the body to defend against infection.
The study also looked at administering three doses of Sinovac. Result recipient booster Sinovac also got an antibody boost.
However, the results were somewhat different if recipients of two doses of Sinovac received booster different types of vaccines.
