Eating a certain type of chocolate, particularly dark, can help reduce many heart disease risk factors, as well as protect against high cholesterol.
Although high cholesterol may be genetic, it is usually caused by poor lifestyle choices, in some cases, medications in addition to a good diet and regular exercise can help lower it.
And if you’re worried about lowering cholesterol, eating dark chocolate is one way to help, according to Indian nutritionist Anjali Mukerji.
“Studies show that consuming cocoa powder (in dark chocolate) helps reduce cholesterol thanks to the presence of polyphenols and flavonoids in cocoa,” says the expert.
If your total cholesterol is between 200 and 239 mg / dL, it is usually considered high, if it is greater than 240 mg / dL, it is considered high.
If your LDL cholesterol is between 130 and 159 mg / dL it is generally considered high.If it is higher than 160 mg / dL it is high.If your HDL is below 40 mg / dL it is usually what is considered low, according to HealthLine.
How does dark chocolate reduce cholesterol?
Cocoa derivatives such as dark chocolate contain at least 70% of a high amount of polyphenols which are responsible for improving health by increasing the level of good cholesterol (HDL), lowering blood pressure and blood sugar levels and decreasing the risk of heart disease, according to a nutritionist.
The best ways to add dark chocolate to your diet:
A cup of almond milk mixed with two tablespoons of raw cocoa powder.
Add 2 tablespoons of coconut cream and a few drops of stevia or honey as other options to improve the taste (if you are not diabetic).
Use cocoa powder because it is rich in polyphenols, to take advantage of the protective qualities of the heart of the cocoa powder mix, eat it every two days or twice a week.
