Traditions and Customs of St. Stephen’s Day
St. Stephen’s Day is the third day of Christmas and the last holiday of the year. Meat dishes are prepared and the whole family gathers at the table. Young families visit their godfathers or older relatives. Pork with sauerkraut and meat pie are most often prepared.
One of the main customs associated with December 27 is called laduvane. The maidens gather and fortune-tell together for marriage. All unmarried women melt their wrists, tied with a ring or other personal item, in a new basin full of water.
The next morning, one of the girls, dressed as a bride, removes the wrists from the boys and calls for marriage and a happy family life.
Maidens put barley under their pillows and hope to dream of their future husbands at night.
On St. Stephen’s Day, the customs of the Dirty Days are observed. During this period, people protect themselves from evil forces. One does not go outside at night, and women follow a number of customs to protect their homes from evil.
