The Bulgarian Orthodox Church celebrates Saint Clement of Ohrid and Saint Clement of Rome. Saint Kliment Ohridski was a medieval scholar and the first bishop who preached in the Bulgarian language. It is assumed that Kliment was born in Southwestern Bulgaria.
It is believed that Clement participated at a young age in the Khazar mission of Cyril and Methodius in 859-861. Clement also participated in the mission of Cyril and Methodius in Great Moravia as their disciple. In some later Slavic biographies it is said that the presbyter Clement was ordained together with Nahum to the priesthood by the Pope in Rome, before the death of St. Cyril. Saint Kliment Ohridski is one of the most significant authors in the Old Bulgarian language.
He wrote biographies, eulogies, church hymns, translated church texts. In science, 15 to 50 of his works are cited. In the “Short Life” it is said that he “invented other forms of letters for greater clarity than those invented by the wise Cyril”.
Therefore, it is generally believed that he also introduced the Cyrillic alphabet, although it is more likely that it developed gradually under strong Byzantine influence in the Preslav school of books in the early 10th century. Today, the largest and most authoritative higher education institution in our country bears his name – Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.
